The Origin of Our Name

O nha mae!

The Cape Verdean literal translation is “Oh my mother!” It is a slang phrase similar to “Oh my goodness!” used to express surprise. I chose this phrase to honor my Cape Verdean ancestors, as well as all of the women who have come before me. Honoring the spirits of the women who have come long before my time and wisdom of their bravery is the foundation of my work with food and healing. It reminds me to honor the life force of every ingredient and the land from which it comes.

Coquina

Coquina is Latin for kitchen. It is the place in my home where I most strongly feel the love of my ancestors and can transform that love into my culinary creations to share with others.
